KOVILJSKO–PETOVARADINSKI RIT SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE

Intro

Koviljsko–Petrovaradinski Rit is a complex of pond-marsh and forest ecosystems (5,895 ha), with numerous living communities, functionally connected to an integral unit.

It is located in the southeastern Bačka, in the flood plain area of the middle reaches of the Danube. Due to its extraordinary natural values, the Koviljsko–Petrovaradinski Rit was proclaimed as an internationally Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) in 1989 an in 2005 an Important Plant Area (IPA), and in 2004 it was added to the list of protected areas dependent on water and significant for the Danube basin (ICPDR) and is on the List of Wetlands of International Importance as defined by the Ramsar Convention (2012).

Taking into account the small distance from Novi Sad (20km) and Belgrade (60km) and the immediate vicinity of the E75 motorway, the Special Nature Reserve Koviljsko–Petrovaradin Rit offers exceptional opportunities from the aspect of establishing and developing tourism and tourist offer in general:

The educational trail at 1000 m long Kurjačka Greda is suitable for smaller groups of visitors.

The site of Šlajz is one of the most visited and most attractive locations in the entire reserve. The closest settlement is Kovilj and represents the meeting point of nature lovers, fishermen and walkers. There is the possibility of renting boats and driving to fish at the Šlajz site.

The site of Tikvara is located next to the embankment, next to the local road, and in the immediate vicinity of Kovilj monastery. At this site the Ecological Education Center was built, which consists of an open-air classroom with benches and tables and a birdwatching facility (capacity for reception of 20-30 students). In addition to the ecological classroom, there is also an observation post for bird watching with a view of the surrounding forest and ponds.

Making an appointment for visits and tour of the SNR Koviljsko–Petrovaradinski Rit is required.
