The Mártély Nature Reserve

Intro

Situated in an area on the left bank of the Tisza which has enjoyed protected status since 1971, this is really an open-air museum dedicated to the straightening of the river (2213 ha). Its most important habitats are those on the dead channels at Körtvélyes and Mártély (Ányás), the lush meadows of the flood plains (Barci-Meadow), all of which are closely connected to the nearby woodland. The flora and fauna in the nature reserve are rich and varied. One of the wonders of the Tisza itself is when, for a few hours only, the surface of the river is covered in a carpet of silky-white winged may-fly. Whitewater area of international importance, which can be freely visited except for the heronry.
