OLD TISA NATURE PARK IN THE VICINITY OF PEARL ISLAND

Intro

The Old Tisa Nature Part close to Pearl Island extends on 391 ha and covers three municipalities: Bečej, Novi Bečej, and Žabalj. The meander of Tisa is the longest in Vojvodina and is 24.5 km long. The most significant value of the nature park is the white water rose that is on the list of natural rarities of Serbia. It is a predominant group of aquatic plants that are by some authors a relic in this part of Europe, such as watermilfoil, swollen duckweed, common lady's mantle. The fish fund is rich with 23 species of fish, for example, pumpkinseed, carp, catfish, orfe. The most endangered species are European bitterling, swordfish, catfish, pike, asp and their protection in the area where they live is regulated by law (according to the Bern Convention).
There are 7 species of amphibians and 3 types of reptiles on this site. It is very important to preserve the sites of the species listed, because this is necessary for survival and reproduction, and some are considered natural rarities. There are 166 bird species registered in the researched area, of which 87 species are protected. There are three extremely endangered species on the CITES list: white tailed eagle, saker falcon, barn owl.
In the area of the Old Tisa, special attention should be paid to the protection of birds with nests, primarily rare species such as Eurasian bittener, western marsh harrier, spotted crake and bluethroat, because reed and coastal vegetation are one of the most important habitats for them. Fauna of mammals is rich in species.
