The Pusztaszer Nature Reserve

Intro

On the flood plains, and those lands which have been saved from the dangers of flooding on the right bank of the Tisza, it is the dead channels left following the re-routing of the river which are particularly interesting, especially those at Labodár (Csanytelek, Felgyô), Zsup Island (Szentes-Labodár) and the Atka Dead Channel (Algyô). To this one should also add the Sas Brook Woodland Reservation in Sándorfalva, Lake Büdösszék (Pusztaszer) surrounded by its alkaline marshes, the saline plains, the oak woodlands with their shrubs and verdant forest floor, and two great fishing lake networks: Lake Fehér (Szeged, Szatymaz) and Lake Csaj (Csanytelek, Tömörkény, Baks). There are substantial areas of grassland and arable, farmed using both traditional and modern farming methods, which provide important resting and feeding areas for migrating birds. Szeged’s Lake Fehér, Sas Brook, Büdösszék (Pusztaszer), Labodár and Lake Csaj (Csanytelek) can all be visited with either a guide or the necessary permission. Special mention should be made of the 54-hectare Historical Memorial Park at Ópusztaszer which, for all its historical and cultural sites, is not lacking in natural interest.
