ŠLAJZ RIVER LOCK

Intro

Šlajz river lock, near Bečej, as a monument of technical culture, is part of the system of the Great Bačka Canal, built between 1739 and 1801, designed and built by the Hungarian nobleman and engineer Jožef Kiš. After the construction, the canal was the first navigable waterway in Europe, which was also used for land development. It is the precursor to the great modern Danube–Tisa–Danube hydro-system.
