STARI BEGEJ–CARSKA BARA SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE

Intro

The Stari Begej–Carska Bara (Imeprial Bog) special nature reserve is located at the alluvial plain of the Begeja and Tisa, in the immediate vicinity of the road routes connecting it with Zrenjanin, Belgrade, Novi Sad and other destinations. This complex of 1,676 ha consists of Stari Begej, Carska Bara, Tiganjica, Zegmenjica, Mala Bara, Perleska Bara and the surrounding marsh. Carska Bara, as a nature reserve, represents a habitat for 240 rare species of birds, of which 130 are resident and 110 are migratory, which makes this reserve one of the most important stations in Europe. Due to its natural values it is included on the Ramsar list, as well as IBA and IPA areas.

As it is one of the important resting places on migratory bird route, some species only stay here for about ten days, and some like wild geese from Siberia, stay for the winter. Carska Bara is the nesting site for all eight species of herons, so the heron became a trademark of the reserve. In the rich and diverse colony of birds, other species are also present, such as pelican, common coot, white tailed eagle, western marsh harrier, the Montagu's harrier, cormorants, sparrowhawks, etc.
