THE NATIONAL LIBRARY BUILDING IN NOVI KNEŽEVAC

Intro

The construction of Maldegem castle in Novi Kneževac occurs at the end of a long construction practice of building homes of wealthy land owners in the center of large estates. The basic concept belongs to the representative construction of summer houses from the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century built in the then dominant Eclecticism style. In designing his work, the architect respected all the natural beauties of the ambiance, fitting the castle into the space and thereby inextricably tying the function, the shape and the natural environment.  The castle of the Count Maldegem was built as a freestanding, terraced building, surrounded by a cultivated park where rare trees have been preserved to this day, and a derelict round fountain standing in front of it. The last owner of the castle, Karlo Maldegem, who had no descendants, left Novi Kneževac in 1950 and moved to Germany where he died.
