ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH

Intro

The construction of the Serbian Orthodox Church building in Bečej was started in 1851 and was completed in 1858. The interior is dominated by the iconostasis built ten years after the construction of the temple, as the work of master Kistner from Vienna. In the period between 1889 and 1893, Uroš Predić painted icons with the standing figures of the saints, the holiday icons and the image of Holy Trinity above the imperial door, and in the highest zone the Crucifix and oval icons with the characters of the apostles, prophets and evangelists. Predić's opus in the Bečej church is among the best works from the early stage of this painter.
