TITEL HILL SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE

Intro

Titel Hill (Serbian: Titelski Breg) is located in Vojvodina, in the area of southeast Bačka, in the municipality of Titel. It represents an isolated loess elevation in the shape of an ellipse due to the erosive effect of the Danube and the Tisa waters as it runs along the right bank of the lower stream of the Tisa river, not far from its confluence with the Danube. The surface of this loess plateau is 79.5 km2, the maximum length is 18 km and the average altitude is 120 m.

According to the findings of botanists during their research on Titel Hill in the past two centuries, the Titel plateau flora has about 630 plant species. The entire space is dominated by a steppe of a relic character. The particular specificity of the flora of Titel Hill is the crested wheat grass and panicle colony. Titel Hill is home to about 40 plant species (medicinal herbs) which are covered by the Ordinance on Control of Use and Trade in Wild Plant and Animal Species. Based on the evaluation of significant botanical areas in Serbia and according to the IPA (Important Plant Areas) criteria, flora and ecosystem habitat characteristics served as the basis for the inclusion of Titel Hill in the national IPA region of Central and Eastern Europe.

This is a significant area for bird nesting. The presence of 25 species of rare and endangered insects has been identified on the slopes of Titel Hill. Sporadic field findings indicate a high level of biodiversity and the presence of rare and endangered species of mammals. The uniqueness of Titel Hill SNR as a steppe area in the immediate vicinity of three rivers and two confluences (the Begej in the Tisa and the Tisa in the Danube) leaves room for different types of tourism, individual or group visits.
