THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHAPEL – 'MONASTERY' OF THE DORMITION OF THEOTOKOS - NOVI BEČEJ

Intro

In the old cult place near the Tisa – where, according to tradition, the Turks burnt a Serbian monastery – a chapel was erected in the XVIII century in the form of a one-nave building with a semicircular altar apse and a tower over the western part of the temple. The greatest value of the Novi Bečej Chapel is the movable material, preserved from the older temple. Particularly interesting is the triptych from the beginning of the eighteenth century (conservation done in 1965), with the central field depicting St. George slaying the dragon, while scenes from the saint's life scenes are shown on the side wings. Imperial Doors, Crucifixion and the altar icon of St. John are parts of an older iconostasis and are kept in the "Monastery" next to a number of other icons of unknown authors from the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.
