The Cathedral Square precincts with the Votive Church

Intro

The Votive Church - the most monumental religious building of our 20th century religious architecture - rises in the middle of Dóm Square. It was built as an oath of the citizens of Szeged escaped from the flood. Thanks to its organ of European reputation, it often hosts large-scale concerts. It was during the demolition of Saint Demeter Church previously erected here that the Early Gothic style Dömötör Tower - the town’s oldest monument - was discovered. In the National Memory Hall, the some one hundred sculptures and relieves in the arcades of the university and religious buildings surrounding the square immortalise the prominent figures of Hungarian history, art and science. The biochemist Albert Szentgyörgyi, who received a Nobel price for his work, worked once at the Medical Chemistry Institute. Votive Church: neo-Romanesque, 1913-(24)-30. Frigyes Schulek; Ernő Foerk. For the eternal memory of the reconstruction after the Great Flood of 1879. Square ensemble 1929-30 by Béla Rerrich
