THE BATTLE OF SENTA

Intro

The goal of the Ottoman war in 1697 was to conquer the lost territories again. The Austrian Empire troops under the command of Eugene of Savoy gathered in the vicinity of Novi Sad and set off along the right bank of the Tisa towards the Ottoman army heading north. On September 10, the Ottomans reached Senta, where they built a pontoon bridge and started the crossing next day at noon. Eugene of Savoy took advantage of the opportunity when the ability to fight of the opposing army was weakened by crossing the river, launched an attack on the bridge defense and the pontoon bridge, and defeated the military forces of the Ottoman Empire in less than two hours. The victory in the battle of Senta of unified military forces under the leadership of Eugene of Savoy was of great historical significance, because thanks to this victory, the great territory of then Kingdom of Hungary was freed from the Ottoman occupation. The epilogue of this battle is the Karlovci Peace Treaty of 1699, which ended the Ottoman expansion in Central Europe.
